As seen at the Wounded in Action Exhibition 2010-2012

Prosthetic Tattoo Art Designs  were Dan Horkey’s contribution for the Wounded In Action, an Art Exhibition Advancements in Orthopeadics. Since there has never been an exhibit featuring personalized prosthetic tattoo art, Dan Horkey had the opportunity  to name his exhibit “Innovated Arts for Prosthetics.”

As seen during the 75th Annual American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS). Following the AAOS, the Prosthetic Art of Dan Horkey went on tour around the U.S. with Wounded In Action.

  • Above Knee Prosthetic, American Flag and the Eagle tattoo was produced using hand painting and airbrushing techniques, reflect the spirit and unity in America.
  • Below Knee Prosthetic with Marbleized Burgundy Paint, Gold Leaf, and Pink Rose was designed to empower women and veteran amputees. The prosthetic tattoo represents “creativity, fashion and style in Prosthetic Arts.
  • Below Knee Camouflaged Prosthetic features and Purple Heart is a demonstration of Dan Horkey’s Support, and interest to provide a customized service to all Purple Heart Heroes in America’s Military Armed Forces.

As It Stands Today

As of November 2012, the VA had curtailed our options after we successfully delivered 12 purchase orders. After a lengthy review by the VA, our methods were not in the definition of what they need to provide a veteran, and Congress would need to change the law.

VA said, It’s Now at the Discretion of Each VA Hospital

The VA National Director of Orthotics and Prosthetics told me, a letter was sent out to all VA Hospitals, stating VA Central Office PSAS in Wash. D.C. would not continue to fund our services. It would be left to the discretion of each facility, and they would need to provide it from their budget.

The issue still stands, because most VA Hospitals are not participating in our Program, or Services.

Dan Horkey began looking for support on this issue, and contacted his Congressmen Derek Kilmer of Washington. A letter was sent to the Veterans Affairs (PSAS) in the summer of 2014. The Congressmen asked what law or statue is prohibiting VA Central Office from continuing to provide Veterans with Dan Horkey Approved Options. We are still waiting for a reply from Central Office of Veterans Affairs, Prosthetic and Sensory Aids (PSAS) in Wash. D.C.

Normally, people are a little hesitant when they see someone wearing a prosthetic, but when people see my flame design; it’s an automatic icebreaker.

I chose the Bald Eagle and Flag Design with a USMC emblem. My pride goes up every time people see it and the reaction is “OH WOW IS THAT COOL.” The work done by Prosthetic INK offers a unique one of a kind prosthetic and that is just what I wanted.

Bob Sampson, injured in Combat, is now proud to show off his prosthetic after covering up for the past 40 years.

Dan, I want to thank you and your guys for the outstanding work you did on my leg. Being able to sport my Vietnam Army Airborne Ranger badge and Phoenix tattoo has made me less self conscious about the leg…in the 40 years I’ve been an amputee, I’ve never worn shorts…I just went out a bought two pair.
